Company

Acrobits is a software development company with a focus on VoIP Clients for mobile platforms. Based in Prague, Czech Republic, Acrobits was founded in November 2008.

In Spring 2009, Acrobits Softphone was released on the iTunes App Store. With its intuitive user interface and extreme reliability, it quickly became the most popular SIP Client on the App Store. The following year Groundwire, Acrobits’ business caliber SIP Client, was released to rave reviews. The first mobile VoIP Client truly capable of replacing your desktop phone, Groundwire has become the mobile SIP Client that others are compared to. In early 2011, Acrobits Softphone was released on the Android Market and almost immediately became one of the most popular SIP Clients on the Market.

The unmatched experience with telecommunications and mobile software development behind our company allows us to build the highest quality mobile software with innovative features and an extremely polished user interface quickly and effectively.

In addition to their flagship products, Acrobits has also created over two dozen white label SIP Solutions for VoIP providers all over the world. Jiri Kral
Founder/CEO

Jiri is the driving force behind Acrobits' success. In addition to providing leadership and direction, Jiri is responsible for the overall development and architecture of our applications and SDK, as well as continuing development of the iOS GUI. Under his leadership, Acrobits has developed the most successful and advanced SIP Client for iOS.

Jiri attended Charles University in Prague and received his MSc in Software Engineering in 2001. Before Acrobits, he developed an award winning IM client with Petr and Stan.

Stanislav Kutil
Co-Founder/CTO

Stan is responsible for the super smooth, intuitive GUI our iOS users have come to know and love. Our lead iOS developer, Stan is also responsible for some of our most useful features, including Quickdial and Number Rewriting.

Stan studied Computer Science at Charles University in Prague. Initially a freelance developer, he then worked with Jiri and Petr on applications for mobile platforms before becoming a founder of Acrobits.

Petr Kalny
Co-Founder/Chief Architect

Petr is responsible for the backbone of almost every Acrobits product, our SIP library. Petr has managed to build a SIP library designed specifically for mobile devices that is maintainable across multiple platforms (iOS and Android) and friendly to third party developers.

Petr graduated in 2002 from Czech Technical University in Prague with a Masters in Electrical Engineering. Before founding Acrobits, he developed applications for a variety of mobile platforms, including an award winning IM client that he worked on with Stan and Jiri.

Rafael Torreblanca
Co-Founder/VP Sales and Business Development

Rafael is responsible for sales and client relations. Highly skilled at communicating and task management, Rafael ensures that external relations go smoothly and efficiently. This paved the waved for Acrobits to become the leading provider of white label SIP clients for iOS and Android.

A pioneer of VoIP technology, he founded one of the first Unified Communications companies in Switzerland in 2003. His unmatched experience with telecommunications and mobile software development is a contributing factor to Acrobits building the some of the highest quality, innovative mobile software available today.

iOS4 and Multitasking on GroundWire and Acrobits Softphone

Since the news originally came out that iOS4 would allow multitasking, we’re asked everyday if and when we are going to add support for multitasking to our SIP clients, Acrobits Softphone and GroundWire. As usual with Apple and the iPhone, the answer is not straightforward and we need to examine iOS4 and multitasking in greater detail first.

To most people, multitasking means that several applications can run simultaneously, one in the foreground with the others in the background. Let’s be clear from the start that this is not how multitasking works on iOS4.

When you quit an application in iOS4, the operating system hibernates it. It is still in the device memory, but it is sleeping and cannot do anything. It can’t send keepalive packets to the SIP server, re-register for incoming calls or do all the other things a SIP Client must do.

There are ways to force the iOS4 not to hibernate the application. Unfortunately, this means keeping the app active all the time when it’s in the background and it will quickly drain your battery.

There is one option that looks promising at first glance; you can tell iOS4 that your application wants to be woken up if there is incoming network traffic. We thought that maybe if we use that, we can be woken up by an incoming call arriving over the network and give the user a chance to answer it. But again, there is a catch; you can only be woken up by incoming network traffic over a TCP connection. SIP and VoIP generally prefer the more lightweight UDP protocol and many (if not most) large SIP providers do not support TCP even as an option.

We don’t want to get to too technical here, but at this point it should already be obvious that the way iOS4 supports multitasking is not very useful for a SIP client. We’ll now focus on how GroundWire (and Softphone) deals with these limitations.

Option 1, the easy way: Keep iPhone awake

As mentioned above, we can force the application to stay alive and awake in the background. If you go to preferences and set “Keep iPhone awake” to “always”, GroundWire will detect situations when it’s being put to sleep in the background and prevent it. It will keep running in the background, keep the connection to the server and listen for incoming calls.

This works fine, the only drawback is that Groundwire running in the background all the time drains the battery pretty quickly. Give it a try, you will see.

Option 2, the hard way: Switching to TCP

Using TCP as the SIP transport protocol is necessary if we want to be woken up by incoming network traffic. You can find the transport protocol option in “Advanced” section of your “SIP Account Settings” - set it to TCP.

It’s possible (maybe even likely) that your SIP provider doesn’t support TCP; if you can’t register using TCP, they most likely don’t. Check with your provider and if this is the case, leave the transport protocol as UDP and read on.

Next, go to your “SIP Account Settings” and set “Incoming Calls” to “In Background”. If your provider doesn’t support TCP, you can go into “Backgrounding Options” and fill in an outbound proxy that will convert the SIP traffic from TCP to UDP. If you don’t know of such a proxy, tap “Try Acrobits” and our experimental outbound proxy will be enabled.

Then, in the “Advanced” settings, set “Expires” to a high value, we recommend 1700. Groundwire can’t refresh your registration more often than once every 600 seconds, which is why a higher value is necessary.

That should do it. If you close GroundWire, you should be able to receive incoming calls natively (as opposed to through push notifications).

Drawbacks? There are many. The setup is quite complicated, therefore reliability is questionable. Providers often don’t support TCP, requiring you to rely on a 3rd party outbound proxy. The application is woken up by all incoming network traffic, which is not just incoming calls. Every keepalive packet will wake the application up and generate a reply, depleting your battery. Granted, it won’t drain the battery as quickly as Option 1 above, but it will still have a significant effect on battery life.

On the positive side, it is more secure than using Push Notifications, as your account credentials do not have to be uploaded to our Push server. If you have a good provider that supports TCP, the reliability should be comparable to Push Notifications.

Conclusion:

In our opinion, multitasking support the way it’s implemented in iOS4 is not particularly useful for SIP clients. GroundWire uses every feature iOS4 provides, but it’s still not enough. It seems clear that Push Notifications will offer the same functionality as multitasking, but reliability will typically be better and battery drain will be minimal. With iOS4, if the application receives a push notification while in the background, it will switch to foreground much faster than before, when it had to be started up. If your turn on Screen Pushed Calls in the Softphone preferences, you can even open the Softphone and see the contact before you accept the call. Therefore, user experience with Push Notifications is greatly improved in iOS4.

Push Notifications are actually a pretty good solution to responding to events like incoming calls while preserving battery life. It is still the solution we recommend for incoming calls, even for iOS4.

Important Note: When switching from background to foreground, we re-register the account to make sure all is working correctly. This is expected behavior, it doesn’t mean the app was not listening for incoming calls when in the background.

Note for Asterisk Users: To enable TCP for Acrobits Softphone while leaving UDP as the primary protocol for other SIP clients, please add the following to sip config (you must have Asterisk 1.6):

A: In Acrobits Softphone, tap on settings, then add ons. Tap on G.729 Annex A and you’ll have the opportunity to purchase it. Since G.729a offers high quality audio with an extremely low bit rate, it is excellent for use over 3G networks.

Q: I am using a VoIP operator [operator name]. Will Acrobits Softphone work with them?
A: If it is a SIP operator, there is a high chance it will work. Check out the Acrobits Softphone verified VoIP operators list for more information.

Q: How do the Push Notifications work? Can I just get the notification, or will I be able to actually answer the call?
A: You will always get the push notification, where you’ll see the phone number or the name of the caller. If you have a wi-fi signal, you will be able to answer the incoming call.

Q: I am using a VoIP operator [operator name]. Will Push Notifications work with them?
A: Acrobits Softphone Push Notification Service is designed for maximum compatibility, so Push Notifications will work with the vast majority of SIP VoIP operators. That said, since every provider’s network is a little different, we can’t guarantee that Push Notifications will work for every one.

Q: I have a firewall. Do I need to open any ports to receive Push Notifications?
A: Apple Push Notifications use port 5223. It needs to be open in order to receive Push Notifications when you’re connected via Wi-Fi.

Q: Can I call Skype users with Acrobits Softphone?
A: Acrobits Softphone is a SIP VoIP software and works with VoIP providers who use SIP protocol. Skype is a proprietary VoIP solution and Acrobits Softphone doesn’t support calls to Skype users.

Q: Where is your Tariff? How much do you charge per minute when I call to [some-country]?
A: Acrobits doesn’t charge for call minutes, because it is not a VoIP operator. We provide the software for your iPhone, to make calls, you will need to have a SIP account. There are hundreds of VoIP operators which offer SIP accounts, you can choose the one which offers the best rates for the locations you’re going to call most.

Q: Which sound codecs do you support?
A: Acrobits Softphone supports G.711 (both u-law and a-law), GSM and iLBC.

Q: What languages do you support? Do you support language [some-language]?
A: Acrobits Softphone is localized into French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Czech, Slovak, Polish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Portuguese, Hebrew, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. We believe it’s important to provide the software in the local language for the best user experience. Please contact us if your language is not supported and you would like to help us in adding it.

Q:When will I be able to use Acrobits Softphone to make phone calls over the GSM network?
A:Now. Apple just updated their developer agreement to allow VoIP over 3G. We’ve already add 3G capability to Acrobits Softphone. You can start using 3G or Edge to make or receive calls on Acrobits Softphone immediately.

Q: I’m unable to purchase the G.729 Annex A add on. What’s wrong?
A: This is probably one of two things. Make sure you are using the same iTunes account you purchased Acrobits Softphone with to purchase the add on. iTunes does not allow you to make in app purchases if it’s not the same account. If you have a jailbroken iPhone, the issue is related. You will probably need to remove AppSync and then reinstall Acrobits Softphone before you can purchase G.729 Annex A.

Q: I added my SIP Account and now it says unauthorized next to my account on the keypad. What’s wrong?
A: Check your username and password. And remember, though Acrobits lists it as username, some providers use your number with them for registration.

Q: When I receive calls, I have no incoming audio. What’s wrong?
A: This often means you need to use a STUN Server or NAT proxy. You can enter these in the advanced settings for your SIP Account.

Q: On my home (business, etc.) wi-fi network, I have no incoming or outgoing audio, but it works on public wi-fi networks. What’s wrong?
A: If you have a firewall, you may need to open some ports for RTP traffic. Open the ports on your firewall, then go to the advanced settings for your SIP account in Acrobits Softphone to configure them to match. Be sure to save the change.

Q: I have an iPod Touch, and I very seldom receive Push Notifications. What’s wrong?
A: Push Notifications work slightly different on the iPod Touch. Your iPod will only check for Push Notifications every 15 minutes if your iPod is sleeping. You need to set auto-lock to never and have a stable Wi-Fi connection to receive all of your Push Notifications. We recommend keeping it plugged into power when possible since it will drain the battery leaving the iPod awake.

Q: I’ve set up Acrobits Softphone to work with my PBX. Everything works fine when the Softphone is open, but I’m not able to receive push notifications. What’s wrong?
A: Make sure your SIP Server has a public IP. Adjust the settings in Acrobits Softphone to connect to the public IP. If you connect to a private IP, our push server will not be able to register you for Push Notifications.

Q: I have been unable to use my Vonage account on Acrobits Softphone. What’s wrong?
A: Vonage requires you to have their softphone service to use your account on third party softphones like Acrobits Softphone. Once you have the softphone service, use your Vonage softphone number and password to register your account on Acrobits Softphone.

Q: I received a Notification stating “Your account (username of SIP account) has expired on the push server”. Now I’m no longer receiving Push Notifications. What’s wrong?
A: There is actually nothing wrong. If you don’t open Acrobits Softphone for three days, your registration for push notifications will expire. To renew the registration, simply open Acrobits Softphone, wait for it to register, and close it again. Please note, Acrobits Softphone renews the registration for Notifications every time you close it. So your registration for Push Notifications should only expire if you don’t use Acrobits Softphone for three days.

Q: I’m unable to use my Bluetooth headset with Acrobits Softphone. What’s wrong?
A: Be sure you have at least iPhone OS 3.1. Bluetooth will not work on Acrobits Softphone if you have an earlier version of the iPhone OS. In the softphone, tap on settings, then preferences and turn Support Bluetooth on. The next time you are on a call on the softphone, tap on speaker, then select your bluetooth device. iPod Touch and iPad users should note that these devices do not support hands free use of bluetooth (in other words you can use the headphones for bluetooth, but not the mic), so you won’t be able to use Bluetooth on the softphone.

First, you can't go wrong with Groundwire. You get all the great features of Acrobits Softphone plus the advanced features exclusive to Groundwire for just a few dollars more than Acrobits Softphone. And if your SIP needs increase in the future, you’ll already have all the features you need without having to purchase an additional app.

For some users, it will be quite easy to decide which one of Acrobits’ excellent products they will need. For example, if you have one SIP account that you really only use to make inexpensive calls to relatives or friends in another country, you probably won’t need the advanced features of Groundwire.

But for other users, the decision may be a bit tougher. For most business users, we recommend Groundwire. Though you might not see an immediate need for the additional features, you’ll have all the options available if need arises. You never know when you might need to make a late night conference call from home. Groundwire will make sure you have the tools available when you need them.

For other users, we recommend you take a look at the additional features of Groundwire and decide whether you need them. Attended transfer is a cool feature, but outside of business, how often do you think you’ll need it?

Setting up your SIP Account (preconfigured providers)

Configuring your SIP Account to work on Acrobits Softphone is a breeze. Just follow the instructions below if your SIP Provider is on our preconfigured list. If your provider is not on our preconfigured list, click here.

Upon opening Acrobits Softphone for the first time you will be taken to the New SIP Account screen.

If your SIP VoIP Provider is listed, simply tap on the name of your provider. Be sure to scroll down to see all of the providers listed.

Tap on the username line and enter your username.

Tap on the password line and enter your password.

Tap Save.

That takes you to the SIP Accounts screen where you can see your new account has been added. If you would like to add another SIP account, just tap on the “+” in the top right hand corner.

When you’ve finished adding your SIP accounts, tap on Settings.

Then tap on Done.

That takes you to the keypad. You’ll see the green handset next to the name of your provider on the top left. Now you’re ready to start making calls!

If your SIP provider is not on our preconfigured list, don’t worry. Acrobits Softphone is still very easy to set up. Just follow the directions below.

Upon opening Acrobits Softphone for the first time you will be taken to the New SIP Account screen. Tap on Generic SIP Account.

Tap on the Title line and enter the title. People often enter the name of the provider here, but you can put whatever you prefer.

Tap on the username line and enter your username.

Tap on the password line and enter your password.

Tap on the domain line and enter your domain. For a lot of providers, it will just be their name.com, e.g. voipcheap.com, callcentric.com. For most providers, this should be all the information you need to enter.

Tap on Save.

That takes you to the SIP Accounts screen where your new account has been created. To add further accounts, tap on the “+” in the top right hand corner. Otherwise tap on Settings.

Then tap on Done.

That takes you to the keypad. You’ll see the green handset next to the name of your provider on the top left. Now you’re ready to start making calls!

1. Join our list of preconfigured providers.

Any provider is free to add themselves to our preconfigured list of providers. Just visit our provider interface to sign up for an account, then follow the directions online to join our list of providers. The only thing we ask in turn is that you provide a link to our products on your website.

NEW: Support for themes (iOS only). If you create a theme and link it to your pre-configured account, users will see the app branded in your corporate colors.

2. Have Acrobits create a white label solution targeted directly at your customers.

If you are looking for a personalized solution, you can't go wrong with Acrobits. The most experienced developer of provider specific SIP clients on the App Store, Acrobits has created white label solutions for Gizmo5, Peoplefone, teleSIP, Othos and many more. With a white label solution, the decisions are all yours. We start by branding the client with your colors and logo, and adjust the settings to be specific to your service. One of the optional items you may provide when creating your entry is the visual theme to be linked to the account. The theme should be a ZIP file, which contains a theme.xml file with several parameters and optionally also PNG images to override the standard GUI of the app. This chapter will describe the format of the theme files in detail.

NOTE: all PNG images may exist in two versions: first is the low-res version named as written here, second is the hi-res version to be used on iPhone4 devices. The hi-res version must have exactly double resolution and the name must have @2x suffix. E.g. if the original background.png has 320x460, there can also be background@2x.png which is 640x920. It is highly recommended to provide the hires version of all images.

NOTE: All filenames are case-sensitive!

title attribute should be the display-name of the theme; it will be displayed under this name on the list of all installed themes
colors node contains colors for various GUI elements, entered using the common #rrggbbaa notation, where the aa is the alpha channel (transparency). Value of FF means fully opaque color, 00 is fully transparent. In case the aa part is missing, FF is implied.
backgroundAlpha parameter specifies the transparency of the background.png image, used as a background. The range is 0 – 255
the next four params starting with button control the dimensions of the main keypad. The PNG file named “allbuttons.png” is used to draw the keypad; there 4 rows of 3 buttons. The parameters specify the width&height of one button and the gaps between buttons. The values must fulfill the equation:
- W = 3*buttonWidth + 2*buttonHGap
- H = 4*buttonHeight + 3*buttonVGap
- (where W and H is the width and height of the allbuttons.png image)

Theme testing

Before you upload the theme to your account entry at providers.acrobits.cz, you should test it properly. For testing purposes, you will need to assign a temporary theme ID to your theme. You can do this in the theme.xml file, by providing an “id” attribute to the “theme” node. Example:

To test the theme, repeat the following steps as necessary:

create a ZIP file of the theme, with the correct layout and contents described above
upload the ZIP file to a server where it will be accessible via http:// URL
go to Acrobits Softphone or Groundwire app, choose Settings->Preferences->Appearance->Theme, tap Edit
choose “Add From URL…” and enter the URL from step 2)
tap the “Load” button. The theme should be downloaded into the iPhone app and if it’s valid, it will appear on the list
tap the newly added theme on the list to apply it and see how it looks

The Native iPhone contacts are already integrated into both Acrobits Softphone and Groundwire. But as many VoIP users are already aware, numbers often need to be dialed differently from your SIP account than they would for your native GSM line. With Number Rewriting, you create 'rules' to automatically edit numbers dialed from Acrobits Softphone and Groundwire. The rules can be as simple or complex as your needs require. This allows you to use your native contacts without having to alter or add new entries.

Acrobits Softphone for Android, Important Information

The following contains important information for those who want to purchase Acrobits Softphone, but are in countries where paid apps are not available on the Android Market. Please read carefully.

The Android Market does not make paid apps available in all countries. In order to make Acrobits Softphone available to users in all countries, we had initially offered Acrobits Softphone as a free download through the Android Market. You would then need to purchase it via paypal. Some customers found this misleading and/or confusing. So we have changed how we offer the application on the Market. As of now, Acrobits Softphone will be a paid purchase on the Android Market in countries where paid apps are available. If you are a new customer in a country where paid apps are available, just download and purchase the Softphone through the market, no other steps are necessary. The remainder of this page is for users who have already downloaded the free version and paid through paypal and for new users in countries where paid apps are not available. Please follow the steps below, depending on which group you belong to.

1. For those in countries where paid apps are available but have already downloaded the free version and paid through paypal.

Please email your paypal transaction number and customer id to support@acrobits.cz. We will refund the payment. Then uninstall Acrobits Softphone from your device and purchase the paid version through the Android Market. This is necessary to be sure you receive automatic updates.

2. For those in countries where paid apps are not available and have already downloaded the free version and paid through paypal.

No other steps are immediately necessary. But you will need to visit here periodically to check for updates. We recommend you become a fan on Acrobits Softphone's Facebook page. All updates are generally listed on the Facebook page within 24 hours of becoming available.

3. For new users in countries where paid apps are not available.

Click here to download the latest version. Once installed, open Acrobits Softphone and you will see the option to purchase it through paypal. iPhone users will be able to download the application from the virtual Apple store - AAP Store enabling them to use easyCALL.pl Internet telephony. The application will be released by easyCALL.pl together with Acrobits Softphone - a leading producer of Internet telephony applications for iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

All iPhone Users who have been waiting for the possibility to use easyCALL.pl service on their devices may now find the application directly in APP Store. In order to download the program users may also go to www.easycall.pl and click forwarding to APP Store. In this way installation of the program will run automatically.

The purchase of the service from the operator is not necessary - just after registering Customers will receive a free account with a telephone number and 5 PLN to use for making calls. The price of the application in APP Store is 6.99 USD, but taking into account the gift from the operator the actual final price for the user is approximately 10 PLN.

What are the advantages of using the Internet operator service directly from the iPhone? It must be remembered that, thanks to easyCALL.pl we can use the Internet telephony service anywhere in the world - all we need is a WiFi access or 3G Internet. But the main advantage of VoIP to the iPhone is the cost saving - the prices of international calls via easyCALL.pl service are much lower than those offered by mobile operators. Acrobits, s.r.o. is very concerned for the privacy of the users of our products. To this extent, no user information is collected except when necessary for using a specific feature of our products (Apple Push Notification Service) and is never shared with any third parties. The only time information is requested other than listed here is for use in troubleshooting technical issues and of course the user has the option to refuse in that case (though that may negatively effect our ability to resolve any issues). Our privacy policy is unlikely to change unless some major new feature requires it. In that case, those changes will be listed here as well as in the news listed on our website.

Why the information is collected, what is collected and how it's collected.

In order for Push Notifications to work, we must register your account remotely when Acrobits Softphone or Groundwire is in the background or closed on your iOS device. To accomplish this, we transmit your SIP account details to SIPIS (our server that handles push notifications) over a https - secure connection. This information is shared with no one and is erased immediately when the push instance expires (3 days for Acrobits Softphone, 6 for Groundwire) or the user disables Push Notifications in the Application. If the user uses one of our methods for multitasking instead of Push Notifications, this information is not sent to SIPIS. Push Notifications is the only feature we currently offer that requires any collection of user information.

Preconfigured Providers

For ease of use, our products have settings preconfigured for many popular VoIP providers. This does not mean that Acrobits is in any way responsible for information you have shared with or is collected by the provider. Providers should be contacted directly for information about their privacy policies.

Forums and Social Networking Sites

Acrobits posts on several forums and Social Networking sites. Acrobits does not collect information from any of these sites, they are only used as tools for communicating with our users. Any concerns about the privacy of information shared there should be directed to the site.
